Don’t Sky Your Art — Elevate Your Visual Storytelling Standards: Katherine Kotaw & Kelsey Prooker
In the visual storytelling community, there is much debate over what constitutes good design. Those who use Photoshop and InDesign snub those who use Canva and PicMonkey — and vice versa.
This debate over what constitutes good art isn’t new. Centuries ago, the Impressionists’ work was deemed a violation of all traditional academic rules of painting, and to punish them, their work was condemned to the most undesirable viewing location in art galleries: neck-straining ceiling level, a practice known as skying.
In her conference, Kelsey Prooker will bring the debate over what constitutes fine art — or good design — into the 21st century.
It’s not about the tools the designer uses to create his or her digital art — but the passion and talent the designer uses to tell a story through visual media.
In her presentation, Kelsey Prooker will teach you how to create “eye-level” digital art, visuals so compelling that your audience will linger over them, get wrapped up in the stories they tell – and remember you when it’s time to buy your product or services.
About Katherine: Hailing from a background in journalism, Katherine Kotaw is no stranger to the essential role visuals play in telling a story. The best photojournalists were paired with the best writers and together, a captivating story was told.
In addition to earning her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Michigan, Katherine’s education includes an apprenticeship with graphic designer, art director and advertising legend, Stephen Frankfurt, the creative visual genius who took out birth announcements asking the world to “Pray for Rosemary’s Baby,” goaded audiences into sampling Lay’s Potato Chips (“Bet you can’t eat just one”) and whose visionary work — credited as the vanguard of the Madison Avenue creative revolution — inspired the TV series Mad Men (his son was asked to create the show’s opening credits.)
About Kelsey: Academically trained in the fine arts at the University of Southern California Roski School of Art and Design, Kelsey Prooker is a self-taught graphic designer, spending much of her time using the computer as her canvas.
Kelsey designs branded visual media for websites, blog posts and social media platforms. Her most recent project – a series of advertisements for a luxury interiors company – was featured in California Home + Design magazine and on Design*Sponge, the blog hailed a “Martha Stewart Living for the Millennials” by the New York Times.
